This is the image for the news article titled Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-OffEach year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

Irma Marsh Middle School and CISD kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with a truly spectacular event. Students in IMMS Mariachi Los Cachorros, CHS Mariachi Los Leones, and IMMS Ballet Folklorico performed for each of our elementary campuses.

Our IMMS Mariachi Los Cachorros ensemble performed and enlightened with a small glimpse of what Hispanic culture means to this everchanging community. Cachorro means lion cubs. They performed alongside the CHS Mariachi Los Leones. The ensemble performed 3 instrumental songs with a Jalisco style called a Son. Each piece was meant for people to dance and thrive at the event with the upbeat rhythms of the tunes. The song list included Son De La Tuerca (Son), El Gatito (Son), and La Tortuga Verde (Son).

For the last and final piece, we performed Viva Mexico with the high school. This song pays homage to our southern neighbor, for leading many other Spanish Colonies and calling for its independence from Spain in 1810. After the Mexican Revolution 10 year later, many Latin American countries were given their sovereignty to become independent on September 15th.

Our IMMS Ballet Folklórico represented the country of México by performing traditional dances from the states of Chiapas and Jalisco.

The 1st duet was from the state of Chiapas and the song is called "El Riíto" performed by 7th graders Christian L and Emily A. This dance is a story of a girl who was sent to the river for water and unexpectedly falls in love with a boy. This dance/story comes from the small town of San Fernando which is Northwest of the state's capital of Tuxtla Gutiérrez.

The 2nd duet and trio performed sones from the state of Jalisco. Jalisco is famously known for their Mariachi music and Tequila and Mezcal.  Our trio danced to the song "Fiesta en Jalisco" performed by 8th graders Ritamarie L and Stephanie G and counselor Diana Rodriguez. The 2nd duet danced to the song "La Tortuga Verde" that was performed live by our IMMS Mariachi performed by Diana Rodriguez and Freddy Cantú.
