Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my student need to take the STAAR Tests?
Federal and state law mandate that students in grades three through twelve take the STAAR exams. In some cases, the scores determine if students graduate or promote to the next grade level. In addition, the performance data from these assessments is used by our teachers to support students academically and provide interventions if necessary.

How long will the test take?
Middle school students are allowed 4 hours to complete the STAAR tests. In certain cases, some students may have additional time allowed as a specific accommodation.

Can I pick up my student after the testing is completed?
Students are expected to remain on campus until the 3:00pm dismissal on STAAR testing days. Teachers have planned academic activities for students after the testing each day. Attendance will be taken for the last class of the day.

Are early dismissals allowed on STAAR test days?
No. It is important that the testing environment is not interrupted for students. Once a student begins the STAAR test, they are required to finish the test. If they leave early, their test will be scored and this may negatively impact their score.

Are remote students required to come to campus to test?
Yes. Our goal is to have 100% of our students present on test days. The STAAR assessment gives us data that teachers use to plan the best ways to support students academically.

If my student is supposed to complete asynchronous work at home for the day, how will they be marked present in their classes?
Students who are assigned to stay home and complete asynchronous instruction are required to complete work for each class period in order to be marked "present." Students have until 11:59pm to complete the work and be marked "present."

What can I do if my student is nervous or anxious about the STAAR Tests?
Testing anxiety is common and we are here to help. If your student is nervous about the tests or experiences anxiety related to testing, please reach out to one of our counselors or our social worker. Here is their contact information:
Social worker Mrs. Hayes - (817) 252-2219 or [email protected]
Counselor Mrs. Pastusek- (817) 252-2208 or [email protected]
Counselor Mr. Riewe- (817) 252-2207 or [email protected]

What happens if my student is absent on test day?
Please call the office and we will make arrangements for your student to make up the exam they miss.

What precautions are in place to protect my student from COVID-19?
We are following all CDC guidelines including mandatory daily COVID screening, daily temperature checks, requred mask wearing and social distancing measures.

What is the best way to drop-off my student on test days?
Test days tend to have considerably more traffic at IMMS. Remember if you are dropping your student off, you may use 2 car entrances. One is on the north end of the building on Doyle Dr. and the less used entrance is in the middle of the school in our parking lot on Marsh St. There are longer wait times on test days, so dropping off early is always preferred. We open our doors at 7:30am.
